How might we help a community reclaim its story to shape its own future?
Listening, Storytelling and Self-Determination in Practice
We worked alongside the Kardu Diminin Traditional Owners of Wadeye to listen, document, and elevate the voices of community leaders, families, and young people in shaping their collective vision for the future.
Using human-centred design and participatory research methods, our team facilitated on-Country engagement through listening circles, interviews, and workshops. Every stage of the process was guided by ethical research principles that prioritised consent, respect, and the cultural authority of Knowledge Holders.
This was a process of deep listening. We worked alongside Elders and families to ensure the stories, priorities, and values of the community were represented in their own language, tone, and context.
Our approach is always relational and built on a deep respect for cultural integrity.
Co-creation and Stewardship
For the Kardu Diminin Traditional Owners, this work was about stewardship; caring for the stories, hopes, and responsibilities that bind their community together. Their goals were clear: safety, wellbeing, opportunity, and cultural strength. Our role was to walk beside them, creating the conditions for those goals to take form through co-creation.
The resulting Wadeye Community Storytelling Toolkit was not an outcome to be handed over but a shared artefact of stewardship enabling emerging Elders and leaders to carry forward their aspirations and advocate for the needs of their people, in their own words. It builds on the Kardu Diminin community’s long history of leadership and collective action, continiuing that vision for a safe, prosperous, and culturally strong Wadeye community.
In recent years, Wadeye has demonstrated remarkable resilience. Through ceremony, sport, and cultural renewal, the community continues to rebuild and reimagine its future. The Kardu Diminin people have shown that progress is strongest when Traditional Owners lead decision-making and when culture sits at the centre of every conversation.
The Wadeye Storytelling Toolkit has become a way to express those aspirations and bring them to life. It is used to guide discussions with government and partners, reminding others that development must align with Kardu Diminin priorities — from safer housing and meaningful jobs to opportunities for youth and elders alike.
It helps connect the story of Wadeye’s vision to tangible plans for better health, education, and community cohesion.
By co-creating this shared language, the toolkit has also become a space for healing. Families may use it to celebrate achievements, document traditions, and build trust between generations.
The community’s story continues to grow as a living record of what is possible when leadership, culture, and partnership work in harmony.
Our work was delivered on-Country in the community of Wadeye (also known as Port Keats) in the Northern Territory.
Our cross-cultural team workedd across Darwin, Melbourne and regional Australia, demonstrating how an agile, inclusive model can support clear communication across culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and remote contexts.
By aligning research, strategy, and storytelling, we ensured the legacy of the Kardu Yek Diminin people's vision and 60,000-year old story.
