Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership

With the public's trust in institutions eroding, the question facing every leader in every sector is the same: what does it take to earn it back?

I want to thank you all for the dedication and expertise you've brought to this work.

From the outset you've understood how important it is to us and this empathy has been reflected in your approach. The amount of time you've spent talking, reflecting and creating has been immense and certainly over and above what might have been expected.

But the result of that is a brand strategy which really "gets us" at the same time as "shifting us". There's still some work to do in finalising how we articulate this but the heavy lifting is done and for that I want to express our sincere gratitude.

Trust in institutions is eroding across every sector. The leaders navigating that reality are being asked to do more. They are being asked to earn integrity in conditions that don't reward patience or nuance, but are increasingly complex, uncertain and at times, volatile.

Cranlana Centre for Ethical Leadership has been working in this space for decades. Its programs are rigorous, its alumni influential, its convictions genuine. The challenge was that its brand had not kept pace with its thinking. In a leadership development market where every organisation speaks the language of transformation and impact, Cranlana's distinctiveness was not coming through.

Cranlana engaged Tank to build a brand strategy that could do justice to the work and strengthen the positioning of the organisation clearly in a crowded market, giving it a confident and consistent voice, and creating a foundation for deeper engagement with alumni, new sectors, and the broader public conversation about ethical leadership in Australia.

The challenge

The vocabulary of ethics and purpose is shared by many organisations, which makes genuine differentiation difficult to establish and easy to lose.

Cranlana's strength was real and recognised — a community of over 5,000 alumni spanning the Reserve Bank, the AFL, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, and corporate Australia. A body of work grounded in philosophy, practice and a distinctly Australian understanding of leadership's moral dimensions.

Our task was not to reinvent Cranlana but to listen closely, surface what was already true, and give it the language and core essence that would ensure clarity towards its future strategy and market positioning.

Our work

Tank worked directly with the office of the CEO, running a series of stakeholder workshops with leadership and staff, a literature review, and a market and sector scan to understand the competitive landscape and identify where genuine differentiation was possible.

What emerged from that process was a brand idea capable of anchoring everything else and act a foundational belief.

An idea that spoke to the simple truth that the decisions leaders make today shape a future they may never see. That trust is not transactional but relational, built over time, sometimes over generations. That ethical leadership is not a destination but a practice, one that requires courage, consistency and a willingness to sit with complexity.

From this we developed a competitive positioning framework, a brand architecture recommendation, and audience personas spanning the public sector, corporate Australia, defence, education and community leadership. A messaging framework structured across four communications objectives gave Cranlana a clear path from building market attention through to sustaining an engaged alumni community. Tone of voice guidelines translated the brand's intellectual character into a voice for the brand.

The strategic shift running through all of it was deliberate: from individual transformation to systemic and cultural leadership. From alumni as participants to alumni as an active community of practice. From a primarily public-sector identity to a credible, relevant voice across all sectors.

Impact

The brand strategy gave Cranlana a shared language for who they are and what they stand for. It established a clear and ownable position in a market where most organisations sound the same, and created the foundations for deeper alumni engagement, broader sector reach, and a more confident public presence.

Throughout the engagement, Tank acted as strategic partner, listener and synthesiser, working alongside leadership and staff to surface existing strengths, clarify Cranlana's unique contribution, and build a brand strategy grounded in what ethical leadership in Australia demands of institutions and their leaders.
